Join us up in the Red Feather Lakes area this time. We're weighing two options and scouting both before we pick:
- Deadman Road: Sites sit around 8,900–9,000 ft, with the possibility of pushing further up toward Deadman Lookout (10,700 ft) if we can find something that fits the group up there. Higher, cooler, and quieter.
- Lost Lake: lower at around 8,000–8,300 ft, so a bit warmer, but it's right near the little lake with some good fishing.
Exact site TBD We're planning a scouting in the next week or so before locking this in. We want to find something that actually fits the whole group before we send folks up to a site that won’t work.
Things to keep in mind:
This is dispersed camping which means no facilities, no water. Bring everything and pack it all out.
Nights get cold fast at this elevation. Bring real layers, not just a hoodie. Keep that in mind for your sleeping setup as well.
Roads up Deadman are graded gravel and generally easy, but some spur roads get rougher. We'll confirm what your vehicle needs once we've picked the site.
f we end up near the lookout, know that it's more exposed to afternoon thunderstorms so plan on rain gear either way, this is Colorado in the summer. The last few sites have had rain every afternoon.
Check fire restrictions before heading up, most of the state has been on fire a lot so lets not make it worse.
For EV drivers:
There's no fast charging out here — the closest reliable options are back in Fort Collins. Charge to 100% before making the trip; don't count on topping off anywhere closer.
More details, including the final site and directions, coming once we've scouted it in person.
